District BACGAT Competition

BAGCATS stands for British Age Group CATegory

BAGCATS is a points system for establishing who the best swimmers really are within their age group at a particular competition. It also promotes swimmers competing in a variety of strokes in accordance with Long Term Athlete Development. Success is Long Term is a Swim England document that fully explains Long Term Athlete Development (reworked as the ADSP) related to the Journey through Swimming.

Points for each swim are assigned to the relevant category but it is always the HIGHEST points only that go towards the total of the five
added together.

In order to compete for top positions in the overall BAGCAT competition, it is therefore essential that the swimmer enters events in all 5 categories.

Most importantly it is to ensure that swimmers do not specialise in one stroke at an early age. A swimmer’s best stroke at age 9 may not necessarily be their best stroke one or two years later and the BAGCAT system with its requirement to swim Medleys is specifically designed to accommodate this. The Form Stroke category also ensures that variety is maintained by swimmers having to be proficient at more than
one stroke.

BAGCAT points system for 9yrs+ using FINA points tables for the district champions. SPORTSYS Meet manager will calculate the FINA points for every swim eligible. The best FINA points score counts towards the cumulative total from the following categories.

BAGCAT Categories

  • Best Sprint – 50m any stroke
  • Best Sprint – 100m any stroke
  • Form – 200m back, breast or fly
  • Distance – 200m Freestyle
  • Individual Medley – 100m, 200m IM
  • 25m events are not included in BAGCAT Awards

BAGCAT Age Groups

  • 9/10 yrs (excluding 25m events)
  • 11/12yrs
  • 13/14yrs
  • 15yrs and over
